When looking at a vegetarian lifestyle, there are 3 major routes you can take. These are: Ovo- Vegetarian, Lacto Vegetarian, and Vegan.
The first of these options is the Ovo-Vegetarian. This type of vegetarian is one that eats eggs along with vegetables, but will typically avoid dairy products such as milk and cheese. This type of lifestyle is typically adopted by those with a lactose intolerance
The next type is the Lacto-Vegetarian. This particular demographic originated in India. With this choice, individuals are allowed to eat milk and cheese along with their vegetables, but will avoid eggs. Their reasoning for this is they wish to avoid the animals hormones that eggs offer. Another reason for avoiding eggs is the yolks contribution to Cholesterol levels. However, recent studies will tell you that in moderation, egg yolks provide an excellent source of nutrition.
The third option is the Vegan route. According to the Official Vegan website, a vegan is someone who “ for various reasons, chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals.” This is the most controversial of these three lifestyles, because it makes it very difficult for a body to get the protein that it needs to function correctly
The first and second option have also been combined into a hybrid known as Ovo-lacto-Vegetarianism. This allows for a more well rounded diet and allows the body more opportunities to get its protein sources.
